Jul 13, 2017 · By 1895, the species had been extirpated from all but 10 counties in the state. The last apparent wolves in Kansas were killed during winter of 1938-39. The species persisted in Canada, Mexico, and the Great Lakes region, and in recent years it has become restablished in Montana, Wyoming, and adjacent states as well as in isolated areas of the Southwest bordering Mexico. The species has been documented in all areas of Kansas except the southwestern counties and most of the Flint Hills. Whether or not the species actually occurs in those areas deserves investigation.
